NBPTS Generalist Early Childhood Practice Test

You must hold a bachelor's degree, have a valid state teaching license, and have completed at least three years of teaching in an early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary school setting.

You must create an account in the National Board Candidate Management System (NBCMS) and pay a non-refundable $75 registration fee for the assessment cycle.

• Component 1: Content Knowledge: A computer-based assessment.
• Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction: A portfolio entry analyzing student work and growth.
• Component 3: Teaching Practice: A portfolio entry with video recordings of classroom interactions.
• Component 4: Effective & Reflective Practitioner: A portfolio entry demonstrating your impact on student learning through assessment and collaboration.

The questions cover three main areas:

• Child Development, Equity, Fairness, and Appreciation of Diversity (30%)
• Knowing and Integrating Subject Matter: Language and Literacy, Technology, and Resources (35%)
• Knowing and Integrating Subject Matter: Science, Social Studies, Arts, Health, and Physical Education (35%)

Yes. Candidates can choose to submit anywhere from one to all four components in a single assessment cycle.

To achieve certification, you must meet three score requirements:

• A minimum average score of 1.75 on Component 1.
• A minimum average score of 1.75 on the portfolio components (2, 3, and 4).
• A total weighted score of at least 110.
• A score of 2.75 or higher on a component provides clear evidence of accomplished practice.

MOC is the process for currently certified teachers to extend their certification for five years. It is less extensive than the initial certification and focuses on demonstrating continued professional growth and impact on student learning.
