RD Practice Test

To be eligible, candidates must complete a CDR‑accredited didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice (such as a dietetic internship or coordinated program). After the program director verifies completion and submits eligibility to CDR, the candidate receives authorization to test.

The RD exam is computer‑adaptive and typically includes a minimum of about 125 questions and a maximum of around 145, with some questions unscored and used for pretesting. Questions are mostly multiple choice and are delivered one at a time, with the computer adjusting difficulty based on responses.

The exam is organized into major domains such as Nutrition Assessment and Diagnosis, Planning and Intervention, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Management of Food and Nutrition Programs and Services. Each domain represents a defined percentage of the exam to reflect its importance in entry‑level practice.

After your program director confirms you have met all academic and supervised practice requirements, your eligibility is submitted to CDR. CDR then sends an email with instructions to create an account, pay the exam fee, and schedule your exam at a testing center.

Once you pass, CDR grants you the Registered Dietitian credential, and you may use the RD or RDN designation according to CDR policy. You will then need to meet any state licensure or certification requirements, which may involve a separate application and fee.

The RD credential is maintained through a continuing professional education (CPE) cycle set by CDR, often spanning several years. During each cycle, you must complete a specific number of approved CPE units and submit documentation through CDR’s professional development system.
